Successful trip to Ireland for the Wilkinson Family
Katherine Wilkinson writes
Connemara enthusiasts Katherine Wilkinson, her daughter Emily Wilkinson age 16 and friend Chloe Eshelby age 14 from Baildon, West Yorkshire enjoyed a holiday in Ireland with their Connemara ponies Delmrose Applejack (14 years gelding) and Geri′s Prince (5 year old gelding) and other members of the British Connemara Pony Society. In between riding on the beach they competed at the 87th Clifden Connemara Pony Show ( 19th/20th August 2010), and the International Connemara Pony Championships (28th August). All three enjoyed success on both ponies:
At the Clifden Connemara Show Delmrose Applejack (Jack) and Katherine won the Connemara Pony ridden by rider aged 21years and over. Chloe and Jack were placed 2nd in the Connemara Pony ridden by rider over 10 and under 16. Emily and Jack came 2nd out of 24 ponies in the Connemara Pony Working Hunter ridden by rider under 16. The course was interesting and involved jumping down a drop fence from one ring to the next and back again!
Geri′s Prince (Prince) and Emily came 4th out of 23 ponies in the Potential working hunter for Connemara ponies age 4 − 6 years class, which was a course of small working hunter fences designed to encourage young ponies. Prince also came 3rd in the in hand Connemara gelding class.
At the International Connemara Pony Championships Emily and Chloe enjoyed further success. Emily and Prince were placed 1st in the 4/5 year old mare and gelding Connemara ridden championship, 3rd in the Prelimary dressage class.
Emily and Jack won the Novice and Elementary dressage classes, and came 2nd out of 22 ponies in the Derby class, managing a stylish clear round over a testing course of 25 fences including drop fences, a ″Hickstead″ type bank, a stone wall, sunken road, logs, and other interesting working hunter fences.
Chloe and Jack came 3rd in a strong class of ponies in the International Connemara Performance Championship Ridden under 16 class.
Emily was awarded the Best Overseas Rider under 16 and presented with a lovely bronze engraved horses head.
At the Oughterard Show on 29th August, Emily and Jack were placed 4th in the prestigious Powers Quarry International Ridden Performance Championship.
They also enjoyed watching the 3 year old loose jumping at Clifden, the Connemara Puissance competition and visiting the Connemara pony sales where there were some bargains to be found. Foals were selling for as little as 400 euros, a reflection of the current economic climate.
In total the trio won 750 euros, sashes, 5 bags of horse feed and a rug. The prize money came in very useful and paid for the ferry crossing as well as a couple of celebratory meals after the shows!
Mum Katherine said ″We all had a fantastic holiday in Ireland. The local people and show organisers were very supportive of the overseas competitors from England and made us all feel very welcome″.

From Monica Herbert
"Our Connemara Mundon Petanque, a 14h dun, 9 year old by Millfields Fanfare had a super day at Suffolk County today. He did his first ever open 14 whp and won and was champion whp. He also qualified for the Royal International. He has also qualified for the RI as a m and m whp which he did at his 2nd attempt this season at Towerlands. He was 14h novice winner at BSPS Area 16 and reserve champion recently. We are in our first season competing with him having bought him last year and taken every thing slowly."

From Charlotte Handley aged 17 years.
"6 months ago now my mum and dad brought me Cloonisle Colleen she had been off work for about 4 years breeding foals. I brought her back into work as soon as we got her home, in Febuary I decided I would like to do the riding club area dressage so my friends and I made up a team and at the area competition held at Duchy College we got team 1st and I was individually 3rd, this meant we were at the the championships at Hartpbury College on Easter weekend. At the championships the atmosphere was amazing, Colleen did the best test we had both done togther the team came 11th."
