Started in 2018, our prestigious Eventing Championships have celebrated the versatility of the Connemara Pony as a performance breed. Since then, the Championships have grown over the last few years: in 2021, over 100 pure-bred and part-bred Connemaras entered the Finals from over 40 qualifier One-Day Events (ODEs) nationwide, with competitors coming from as far afield as Truro and the Orkney Islands!
We have been extremely fortunate to secure a title sponsor, Saracen Horse Feeds, who generously sponsored the cost of putting these Finals on and providing wonderful winners’ sashes, rosettes and prizes. The Championships are now known as the “Saracen Connemara Eventing Championships”.
The Championships are also evolving in scope. 2021 saw the introduction of a 70cm course at the Finals, meaning that we now have four Championship height sections: 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm. We hope soon to be able to spotlight our brilliant juniors with the introduction of U16 sections to the 70cm, 80cm and 90cm Championships.
In 2022, we will again be putting on qualifiers all over the country, and a list of qualifier venues will be available soon. Our qualifiers are held at unaffiliated ODEs. All of our qualifying venues host British Eventing (BE), Pony Club or Riding Club Area qualifiers, which means that all our qualifier courses are of a required standard. We are very grateful to our qualifier hosts, as without their generosity it would be impossible to put on these national Championships.
Our Championship Finals are run for us by HorseEvents and this year will be held on the weekend of the 10 & 11 September at Swalcliffe Park Equestrian, Park Lane, Swalcliffe, Banbury, Oxon OX15 5EU.
How to qualify
To compete at a qualifier, the owner or rider do not have to be a member of the BCPS, but the pony must be a pure-bred or part-bred Connemara registered with, or in the case of imported ponies, overstamped by the BCPS and listed on the UK database.
We accept qualifications for four height sections: 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm. You can qualify by either:
- Being placed in the top 10 of your section; or
- By posting a double clear
When you enter your chosen qualifier, it is your responsibility to notify the organiser in advance that you wish to be eligible to qualify for the Saracen Connemara Eventing Championships – you can do this by ticking the appropriate box on the entry system or posting a comment in the comments box. If you successfully qualify by achieving a double clear or top 10 placing, ensure that you collect you qualification card from the organisers.
In order to compete at the Finals, your pony must be registered with or (for overseas/Irish ponies) overstamped by the BCPS. You must also ensure that the correct owner is recorded in the pony’s passport.
You must also be an Adult, Junior, Joint or Family member of the BCPS in order to compete at the Finals. You can find out more about becoming a member on our Memberships and Fees page, or buy membership now in our Shop.
